Frequency Band
Which frequency band does your system use or require?

What coverage area does your new system need to serve?
The coverage radius helps determine whether a single repeater site is sufficient or whether a multi-site linked network is needed. A single site typically covers a radius of around 20–30 km in good, relatively flat conditions — and considerably less in hilly, built-up, or heavily wooded terrain. Antenna height, frequency band, and output power all affect real-world range, so treat this as a planning guide rather than a guarantee.
A radius beyond ~30 km usually points to multiple sites and is pre-selected for you — but you can choose multiple sites for a smaller area too (e.g. filling coverage gaps across a refinery or plant).

How many talk groups does your system need?
A talk group is a named channel or group — e.g. Management, Security, Maintenance. This applies equally to LMR radio systems and PoC platforms. On integrated LMR + PoC systems (e.g. TRBOnet), LMR and PoC talk groups can be linked so radio and smartphone users share the same channels seamlessly.

What is the maximum number of calls that need to happen at the same time?
Count every call that could be active at the same moment — group calls and one-to-one private calls alike. Each one occupies a channel while it's in progress, so a private call between two people uses capacity just like a group call. Example: if Security and Management might be in two separate group calls while one supervisor makes a private call, that's 3 simultaneous calls. This determines whether a single repeater (max 2 at once) or multiple repeaters are needed.

You indicated good public cellular coverage in your extended operational area and that brief communications interruptions are acceptable. This means a PTT over Cellular (PoC) platform can reliably serve your expanded coverage area — without the cost of deploying additional repeater infrastructure at remote sites.
📻Your existing LMR system stays in place. PoC extends your reach over the cellular network. If you choose, radio users and PoC device users can share the same talk groups through an integrated dispatcher platform — or operate as separate parallel systems.

There's no wrong answer. PoC avoids new infrastructure and is quick to deploy, but carries an ongoing per-device subscription.
